The following sections on the Birifor people of North-Western Ghana are based on fieldwork among the Birifor as well as on external sources. My fieldwork, which was conducted from September to December 1999, was part of a thesis on the divination practices of the Birifor. It was conducted in Western Gonja, primarily in Birifor territory in the vicinity of the big hinterland village of Kalba.
